NOAA Weather Band Radio Antenna Location

To give you the best chance of reception of your local National Weather Service Radio broadcast, an indoor weather band antenna needs to be placed on a wall or in front of a window towards the direction of the NOAA transmitter. To determine the direction of the National Weather Service transmitter, go to the following NOAA Weather Radio Coverage Maps for assistance. Click on your state, then County Coverage Listing above the state map, find your county in the list and click on the call sign for your county. When the next page loads, find the new map. In the middle of the white area on the new map will be the location of the transmitter. Determine the relative direction from your location with this map. You can now determine the best location for your radio and antenna.

NOTE on the Indoor Weather Band Radio Antennas

While this indoor weather radio antenna is made for receiving NOAA/National Weather Service radio broadcasts and the functionality is amazing, the radials are constructed of telescopic rods that are made of chrome-plated brass. They can break so you need to be careful with them. Obviously, this is not a particularly positive thing to point out about the antenna but you need to know you are not getting an unbreakable antenna by any means, in fact, unlike most of the antennas we sell, it will break if mis-handled. Also, metal is a signal blocker so if your home has metal siding or your roof is metal or you have radiant barrier an outdoor antenna mounted above the metal is a better solution unless you can get this indoor antenna mounted IN a window facing the NWS radio transmitter.

Indoor Weather Radio Antennas in Use

At your location, the farther away from the side of the structure towards the NOAA weather radio transmitter you are, the higher the indoor weather band radio antenna will need to be for proper reception. NOAA/National Weather Service broadcasts are vertical so your indoor weather radio antenna should be mounted vertical or as close as you can get it to the vertical plane. Height is critical so always try to get it as high as you can.

Flexibility of the Inside Weather Radio Antenna

This national weather service radio antenna can be used near the weather band radio or it comes with a total of 9’ of cable so you can put the weather radio antenna near a window for best reception. You can use it in a portable setting or even mount it in the attic as it will out-perform any other omnidirectional you can place in the attic. The only limitation would be that it should not permanently be set up outside, but it wouldn't hurt it to use it outside on the patio or take to a park or campout in any weather just don't leave it outside in the open permanently though it would perform great under an overhang or on a covered balcony.

Coax for Weather Radio Antennas

The cable that runs from this weather radio antenna to your weather band radio is 75 ohm coaxial. The NOAA Weather antenna has 3 feet of permanent coax and comes with six feet of additional coax and a coupler for a total of 9'. You may change the 6' extension cable below to a longer option if you need extra coax to reach the best place for reception. You want to get the weather band radio antenna to an outside window or wall as high as you can get it.

Weather Radio Antenna Connectors and Adapters

Choose the weather radio antenna connector you want below. The beauty of using an adapter is if you change weather band radios you merely have to replace the weather radio antenna adapter rather than get a new external weather radio antenna or solder on a new weather radio connector. All Midland weather radios and most Radio Shack weather radio units have RCA antenna jacks. If your weather radio antenna jack is smooth it is an RCA (also known as phono) antenna jack, if it has to points on the side it is a BNC and if it is threaded and is identical to a TV antenna connector it is an F antenna connector. For visual help with connectors, go to the Weather Radio Antenna Connector and Adapter Guide.
